*Special Note about the Battle of Granikos: Modern historians have had an awfully difficult time explaining how the Battle of Granikos unfolded. Of all the attempts to harmonize the contradictory, illogical, and unsatisfactory accounts of this battle, I find the imaginative account of Professor Peter Green most persuasive. See, Peter Green, Alexander of Macedon, 356–323 B.C., Appendix, pp. 489-512 (1974). Among other things, he argues that the Battle of Granikos was fought in two phases, over two days. The animated depictions of the Battle of Granikos above show the evolution of the engagement on the second day. For a detailed verbal description of both days of this battle, please see my book: Alexander Geiger, Prime Directive (rev. ed.), pp. 405-25 (2019).
